Boy Erased is the very powerful memoir by Garrard Conley and now an upcoming movie starring Nicole Kidman, Russell Crowe and Lucas Hedges. Garrard Conley shares his story on Pop Culture Confidential.
Garrard Conley grew up in the US Bible belt. After being outed to his parents he was given an ultimatum by his father, a Baptist pastor, and his mother: go to »gay conversion therapy« or lose your family, community and school forever. In our interview we talk about his upbringing, his time at gay conversion therapy, the love he has – and still has – for his parents, faith, having tough conversations in deeply religious communities, how to deal with hate, why ex-gay therapy is steadily growing under the Trump administration and so much more.
The film adaption of Boy Erased is already said to be a major Oscar contender. Directed by actor and director Joel Edgerton, with Lucas Hedges starring as Conley, Russell Crowe and Nicole Kidman as his parents. Screening at festivals this fall, released in November.
